Géo Vermeire’s Kodak Cherry, published in 1925, turns the promotion of a cherry aperitif into a theatrical display of colour and balance. At its centre, an elegantly stylised woman raises a tray bearing a bottle and two glasses above her head. Her white bodice emerges from an extraordinary skirt composed of oranges: a rounded, richly modelled mass of fruit set against a deep blue ground. The resulting silhouette is at once human, decorative and instantly legible from a distance.

Vermeire was a Belgian artist working as commercial illustration became an increasingly prominent field for artists and designers. By the 1920s, advertisers were relying on concentrated compositions, assertive lettering and simplified colour to hold attention amid the growing visual competition of the modern street. Here, the product is not presented through a detailed social scene. Instead, Vermeire constructs a compact emblem of service and conviviality, combining the polished glassware of the bar with the abundance and colour of fruit. Although the name “Kodak” now carries an immediate photographic association, the poster’s own wording identifies its subject as “KODAK CHERRY APÉRITIF AUX CERISES”.

A closer look

The woman’s raised arms establish the poster’s strong vertical axis. Her pale figure stands sharply against the blue, while the horizontal tray provides a poised counterweight above her head. A sheen along the bottle and small highlights on the two glasses suggest reflective surfaces without interrupting the broad, flat clarity of the design. Large circular earrings add another graphic accent, echoing the fruit gathered below.

It is the skirt that gives Kodak Cherry

The typography anchors the scene at the bottom. “KODAK CHERRY” receives the greatest emphasis, while the explanatory French phrase beneath clarifies the drink itself. Rather than competing with the figure, the lettering completes the advertisement’s visual hierarchy, moving the eye from spectacle to name and then to product description. A green border encloses the orange, blue and white arrangement, introducing a cooler secondary note around the intensely warm fruit.

Context and significance

This kind of economical visual storytelling was particularly suited to the commercial poster. A passer-by did not need to decipher an elaborate narrative: the serving gesture, gleaming bottle and exuberant fruit could be understood almost immediately. Yet Vermeire’s design rewards a longer look through its witty transformation of produce into fashion and its careful negotiation between flat graphic form and touches of illusionistic modelling.

The poster’s appeal lies in that tension. It belongs unmistakably to the visual culture of 1925, with its streamlined figure, emphatic colour blocks and disciplined typography, but its central invention remains fresh: a server whose costume becomes a display of abundance. Bold enough to function as advertising and strange enough to be remembered, Kodak Cherry exemplifies the imaginative compression of interwar commercial art.
